You already know about Brandon's departure and Lawrence's injury. We'll also be playing without Richie tomorrow.  Richie is playing.

On the positive side, Mandi, Nina and Kedi will be back.

Down to the Wire

Today's games will wrap up the dressed rehearsal known as the regular season. The games that count will begin next week. The outcome of today's games will determine who and when we play next week. The only way we can finish first is if we beat the TD's and the Untouchables beat SWAT. Here are the possibilties:

Mod Squad on the Horizon

Our next challenge is upon us this afternoon. The Mod Squad have a very good team and we'll have to play well to beat them. Don't think we can just show up and come away with a win. We had two good practice sessions this week so we should be well prepared. Still, I have some food for thought.

Preparing for Nicholl Park #2

A couple of notes about Nicholl Park #2 for those who haven't played there before -- the field is mostly in the shade and it's windy in the afternoon so it gets cool there even on sunny days. It may be wise to wear long sleeves under your jersey if you get cold easily. Also, the sun will be in the faces of the right fielder and right-center fielder. Besides your cap (which I will deliver tomorrow), sunglasses are highly recommended. If you have them, bring them.

PLAYOFF GAME VS MOD SQUAD

THE COACH/GRANDPA HAS TWO THINGS TO SAY. ONE: WE WANT MR. BLUE TO UMPIRE OUR GAME NOT THE LIGHT SKINNED UMPIRE WHO LOOKS LIKE SMOKEY ROBINSON. TWO: ALL PC BRICKS IT'S TIME TO STOP SLEEP WALKING ON DEFENSE AND LET'S PLAY SOLID BRICKS DEFENSE. WE NEED TO SETTLE DOWN AND STOP DOING ALL THESE CHANGES. ALSO WE NEED TO TALK ON DEFENSE AND LET ME POSTION THE OUTFIELDERS BECAUSE I KNOW THE HITTERS ON THE TEAM. THE MOD SQUAD WILL BE GUNNING FOR US. IT TIME FOR US TO PLAY LIKE WE USED TO (CHAMPIONS). WE NEED TO BE FOCUSED. NO MORE JOKES. SERIOUS BUSINESS, NO MORE TALKING TO THE OTHER TEAMS. JUST SAY HELLO AND GOOD LUCK. OTHER THAN THAT NO MORE CONVERSATIONS WITH THE ENEMIES. IN THE IMMORTAL WORDS OF BIG DADDY KANE; "LET'S GET THE JOB DONE". P.S. IF WE DON'T WIN THIS WEDNESDAY, NO FOOD AFTER THE GAME AND GRANDPA/COACH WILL NOT SPEAK TO ANY OF YOU AGAIN AND WILL RETIRE.

JULY 28 GAME VS DREAM TEAM

GREAT GAME BY ALL THE LADIES. YOU DESERVED ALL GAMES BALL. GREAT HITTING AND DEFENSE. AS FAR AS THE COACH/GRANDPA. MY PLAYING CAREER IS OVER. MY PERFORMANCE WAS TERRIBLE. I'M RETIRED CAN'T DO IT KNOW MORE. I'M OLD, FAT, BALD LOOKING LIKE MY TWIN BROTHER CARL WINSLOW FROM NOW ON THE COACH/GRANDPA WILL BE A SCOREKEEPER/FAN. THE TEAM IS IN GOOD HANDS AND YOU ALL SHOULD GO ALL THE WAY TO CHAMPIONSHIP AND BE UNDISPUTED CHAMPS FOR 2009. LATER COACH/GRANDPA

We Could Clinch Next Week

With two games to go, we find ourselves in first place by a slim margin over the Mod Squad. Next week's games could determine our final place in the standings before we play our makeup game with the Terminal Digits. If we take care of business with the Dream Team and the Mod Squad knocks off the Terminal Digits next Tuesday, we clinch first place. We would be 5-1 and the Mod Squad would be 5-2. Every other team would have at least three losses or two losses and a tie. The worst we could do is finish 5-2 which would tie us with the Mod Squad. Since we beat them in head-to-head competition, we would win the tiebreaker and claim first place regardless of the outcome of our game against the TD's. If we win but the Terminal Digits defeat the Mod Squad, the TD's would still have a chance of claiming first place. They have played only four games because of their postponements with us and SWAT. Their record is 2-1-1. If they beat Mod Squad and SWAT, they will be 4-1-1 and we would be forced to beat them in our final game to keep them from overtaking us with a 5-1-1 record. If we lose to the Dream Team, we'll definitely have our work cut out for us. We would have to defeat the TD's and hope SWAT could knock off the TD's in their makeup game. So as you can see, losing to the Dream Team would put us in a most uncomfortable position. I recommend we avoid it.

Game #2 vs Master Blasters

We're playing at Nichol Park #1. The game begins at 5:00 PM. Try to be at the park by 4:30 so you can warm up and stretch before the game begins.

One Day To Go!

We're practicing today at Nichol Park #3. Obviously, this is the only practice left before the season starts so let's get as much out of it as we can. So far as I know, everyone but Derrick will be there. I'll set up the Hurricane for those who wish to get some extra swings on the side. I sure hope Derrick's wife is doing okay. And before any of you wiseguys say it, I don't just mean that for the selfish reason of getting Derrick back on the field with us. As someone who has broken nearly as many bones as Evil Knievel, I know the kind of pain and inconvenience she must be going through.
