ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

It's interesting how so many people who weren't present at our game with the Untouchables think they know what happened that day. People who should know better offer up idle speculation about our team. We've heard it all. Some of the gossipers had four of our players clamoring to play for the Untouchables. Others had the entire team packing it in and folding up. And almost all of them are blaming US for the incident that caused the game to be halted.

But we were there and we saw what happened. We have have an umpire who, if asked, will tell everyone who the instigator and and troublemaker was that afternoon. And we have it all on video. For the good of our league, we have kept quiet about it. Somehow, our efforts to downplay the incident have been viewed as some sort of admission of guilt while the instigator skates away with nary a mention.

This has gone on long enough. The only thing anyone on this team was guilty of was a momentary lapse in judgment. The right thing to do in that situation was to tune the instigator out and go about our business. But one can easily understand how a man might not be thinking straight after seeing his sister taken away from the game in an ambulance. When one's wits are muddled by worry, one might not be inclined to react to an antagonist in a calm, rational manner. So, yes, to that we plead guilty.

In retrospect, we have regrets but we don't have any reason to feel ashamed. Indeed, we have every right to be proud. Six of our women were unable to play that day, three of them unexpectedly. Another suffered a terrible injury that forced her to leave the park in the third inning. From that point we had to carry on with only eight players, most of whom were out of position. Despite the deck being stacked heavily against us, we were still in position to win the game. Unfortunately, one man, in defiance of the umpire, decided to stir up an unnecessary argument with one of our players rather than play the rest of the game. It's frustrating that we didn't walk away from it but c'est la vie. We'll wear that loss because we know what it really was.
