STATS

I saw Quinton at the championship game yesterday. He mentioned that some of you guys had a bet on who would have the highest batting average this season. Maybe there were some other bets too. For the record, here are the stats:

BATTING AVERAGE (BA)
.821 Carlos
.771 Quinton
.683 Brandon
.680 Richie
.615 Derrick

ON BASE PERCENTAGE (OBP)
.805 Carlos
.790 Quinton
.727 Richie
.667 Brandon
.615 Derrick

If you're wondering how one's OBP can be lower than one's BA, it's because sacrifice flies count as outs for OBP but not for BA.

SLUGGING PERCENTAGE (SLG)
1.897 Carlos
1.760 Richie
1.543 Quinton
1.244 Brandon
1.192 Derrick

ON BASE + SLUGGING PERCENTAGE (OPS)
2.702 Carlos
2.487 Richie
2.332 Quinton
1.911 Brandon
1.808 Derrick

OPS is the best measurement of overall hitting ability. Batting average measures the frequency of hits per at bat but it counts doubles, triples, and homers the same as singles and it ignores the times one reaches base by walk. OPS considers all of these things in a single shortcut to measure extra base power plus the ability to reach base by hit or walk.

Carlos, I hope you had a piece of the action.
