Should We Continue Practicing On Mondays?

We need to make a decision about our practice schedule. At the beginning of the season, I agreed to come out Mondays and Tuesdays because it was clear we needed some extra work and there were some who weren't able to practice on one day or the other. I think this schedule has outlived its usefulness.

Of late, the turnout on Tuesdays has been much better than on Mondays. If it weren't for the Mod Squad teaming up with us on Mondays, we wouldn't have enough players present to do anything but batting practice. Frankly, such practices are barely worth the effort. (I'll expand on that thought later.)

I think it's time that we set a regular practice day and time so we can have the entire team work out together. Having parts of the team showing up on different days and times is preventing us from developing the level of teamwork we should have achieved by the midway point in the season. Also, I'm getting pretty tired of busting my tail to get all of our equipment out to the park by 4:30 each Monday and Tuesday only to have the same small handfull of teammates show up by 5:00.

I propose that we practice on Tuesdays at 5:00. That seems to be the day and time we get the best attendance. I have a plan to streamline our practices so we spend our time sharpening our skills and developing teamwork instead of spending so much time in batting practice. Long batting practices amount to little more than a pitcher and batter playing while everyone else stands around. In my opinion, such practices are unproductive and boring.

What I have in mind is something like this:

5:00 - Set up, stretch and and warm up together.
5:20 - Break into two groups of infielders and outfielders for fielding drills.
5:40 - Rotate players who play IF & OF to the other group & continue.
6:00 - Merge into one group for full team fielding & baserunning drills,
6:30 - Batting practice - one bucket of 12 balls for each player, rapid fire.
7:00 - Done. I will stay later for those who want extra BP or fielding work.

We have nineteen active players on our roster. That's enough for almost two full teams and certainly enough to run the drills that will mold us into a better softball team. If we can get everyone out to practice on time, we can conduct a fun, productive practice and be done within two hours. Regular and efficient practices should eliminate any further sloppy, lethargic displays of softball such as we put on last Thursday.

  1. I am down for Tuesday practice as well. I know me personally, im taking inventory on my body a little more this year around, so a set date for practice & of course game day would work best. Plus like u said, we have more Bricks turnouts on Tuesdays & we can practice better as a team than a staggering BP session.

  3. It appears there's something wrong with Blogspot as the poll isn't working. Also, this post shows "0 comments" but there are two prior to this one. I'll report the bug.

  6. The interest in continuing our Monday practices was certainly underwhelming.
